We came very close in 2013 and at the end of last year, but now we did it! The old record from 2012 (Christie’s with € 650,000) has been broken by almost a million more: € 1,600,000 (hammer price)!

This sensational result only gets better by the fact that it is also the highest auction result ever for art at a Dutch auction. Artprice.com, the world leader in art market information, has confirmed this record.

As of 2007, the record was held by Sotheby’s Amsterdam. They sold ‘The card players’ by Jan Lievens (1607 – 1674) for € 1,550,00.

Not only the fact that we achieved a world record for the Hofker underlines that this was an exceptional auction. The total turnover of approx. € 3,800,000 shows this as well. We are very pleased to have achieved this result with only 83 lots, as it is quite a unique accomplishment for an auction in the Netherlands.

In addition to the aforementioned work by Hofker, we also sold a painting by Lee Man Fong, President Sukarno’s ‘court painter’ for € 480,000. It was definately one of the highest results for this artist, if we don’t include his approx. fifteen extraordinarily large works (with a width of at least 180 cm).

The market for work by M.C. Escher is still excellent. In the last auction we once again achieved various world records, such as for ‘Predestination’ wich is shown here, the book ‘Regular Division of the Plane’ (though this was expected because it was a unique edition with signed prints) and ‘Order and Chaos’. For some of the other works by M.C. Escher we auctioned, the world record was almost equaled.

It has already been some time since we updated you regarding the new book about Rudolf Bonnet. We expect to finalize the project by the end of this year. We have been working on it for quite some time now and notice that many are looking forward to reading the finished book. Understandably, we often get the question why it is taking so long. An important reason is that new material is still coming in. An example of this is the work shown here in Bonnet’s studio (photo from the archive of Louis Nagelkerke). This work will be auctioned in November and before we didn’t have a good photo in color. Another reason is that dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s takes much longer than we expected. All in all, we have come a long way but we are convinced the end product will be great! When we showed the latest concept to someone who knew Bonnet well, his comment was, ‘I think it looks really good! Nice layout – printing!’. However, we want to finish well. And since that takes time, the publication of the book will most likely be at the end of this year.
