Good Indonesian paintings from the 19th century are rare.
Dr. Herman F.C. ten Kate wrote the following about this painting:
“What I know of Herwerden’s work from my own observation, is limited to only five paintings. One of the best is the ‘Segara Wedi’, on the southern coast of Java: a beautiful quiet bay, surrounded by mountains. Both the terrain and the vegetation really come into their own here, thanks to the drawing and the colours.”

This auction contains several important Indonesian paintings, including Willem Gerard Hofker, Lee Man Fong, Raden Basoeki Abdullah and Gerard Pieter Adolfs.
A beautifull still life with a tranquil atmosphere. However, that’s not all. The condition of this work is excellent for a watercolour painting from that time.
In addition, the provenance is special, as the work was in the possession of Henk Cleyndert Azn (1880-1958). Cleyndert was an art collector, and an influential conservationist and planner. He was director of both ‘Natuurmonumenten’ and the ‘Vereniging Rembrandt’. We are also auctioning an important painting by Lee Man Fong from his collection.
In this book, ‘Regelmatige vlakverdeling’, M.C. Escher (1898-1972) explains and talks about his fascination for the regular division of the plane. It was published in 1958.
In a letter to Ir. C.J. (Karel) Asselbergs, the secretary of the foundation ‘De Roos’, dated 17 May 1956, he wrote the following about this book that still had to be made at the time:
“It could turn out to be a most curious release; in any case something, (in all modesty) that no other graphic artist on the whole globe could deliver to you. It doesn’t sound very modest, but what can I do about it? That’s just the way it is.”
Each book contains six prints in black and white and six prints in red. The latter are loose. The book has an edition of 175. All in all, a very special book!
But now the most special part: the book that is coming up for sale with us has six prints in red, ALL SIGNED! A unique copy! Besides, the provenance is exceptional: the above-mentioned Ir. C. J. Asselbergs.

The vase shown here is from ‘The Hatcher Junk’ (named after the salvor of this shipwreck). The junk was on its way from China to Batavia with porcelain for the VOC. However, it sank around 1645 on the Admiral Stellingwerf reef near Singapore.
In addition to these porcelain objects, the auction also contains a number of VOC related pieces, including a lot of 47 cups and saucers from another shipwreck (The Vung Tau Cargo), a rare VOC cannon manufactured by Cornelis Ouderogge (similar example in Maritiem Museum Rotterdam) and a Wedgwood bust depicting Michiel de Ruyter (similar copy in Rijksmuseum Amsterdam).
